Living with a mental health condition takes courage, day in and day out.

But society hasn't caught up to that reality. Mental illness is still gravely stigmatised and misunderstood.

It is well known that students are an at-risk group for poor mental health, often being in that vulnerable age range where mental health conditions first present. Education is also a crucial factor in future well-being. It is important that students be supported through such a demanding endeavour.

Each year students face significant mental health challenges and despite such difficult circumstances, continue learning.
This project was designed to honour them.
The Courage to Persevere Project is committed to providing low-barrier awards that are funded directly to the students. We believe that:
-
Vulnerable populations deserve support that is coupled with respect.
-
It is important to trust that students know what is best for them, and to honour their agency.
-
GPA is not the only indicator of success. We understand that grades may suffer during adverse times. These awards are about perseverance and strength, not academic outcomes.
-
It is important to respect sensitive student data, and as such, ensuring the privacy of student information is a priority for the project when setting up the terms of administration.

We are currently established at both Simon Fraser University, and the University of Victoria and hope to raise funds at both of these institutions to endow our awards.
